THE HISTORY OF THE UP/DOWN POWER-RESERVE INDICATOR.

Many historic pocket watches and highly precise A. Lange & Söhne marine chronometers were equipped with an UP/DOWN power-reserve indicator. Today, several Lange models feature this useful display again. It shows the owner of a Lange watch its state of wind and indicates how much longer it can run before it needs to be rewound.

A special variant of the UP/DOWN power-reserve indicator was implemented in a timepiece crafted by the Lange manufactory in the period from 1997 to 2007: the 1815 UP and DOWN. It relies on a patent granted to Otto Lange in 1940 involving a planetary gearing integrated between the movement plates.
