Flawlessly executed engravings add particular charisma to A. Lange & Söhne movements. The traditional floral motif, the smoothness of the burin’s cut, and the even flanks of the incisions create a choreography of light and shadow that tastefully complements the patterned and polished surfaces.

Every Lange watch has a hand-engraved balance cock or tourbillon cock. The movements of the CABARET TOURBILLON and of the LANGE 1 TIME ZONE feature an additional intermediate-wheel cock that is engraved by the same master artist as its balance cock or tourbillon cock.

ENGRAVINGS IN THE MOVEMENT OF AN A. LANGE & SÖHNE WATCH.

For several generations, the engravings of the balance cocks, tourbillon cocks, and intermediate-wheel cocks have been based on the same motif: it consists of flower petals that surround the central screw of the cock and a floral pattern that subtly follows the charac-teristic outlines of the component to which it is applied.

But at the same time, every engraving is unique. The depth of the cut and the curl of the lines are like an inimitable fingerprint – a personal signature that sets each individual timepiece apart from all others.

Engraving techniques

ENGRAVINGS ON CASEBACKS.

On request, a decorated precious-metal caseback is available for every A. Lange & Söhne timepiece. It can be engraved with persona-lised motifs – such as a family emblem, a dedication combined with a monogram, or in the classic manner with a floral pattern.

Lange’s masters produce artistic intaglio engravings by using a burin to incise the motif out of the caseback metal. When the complex relief technique is used, the material around the motif is carefully carved away to produce a relief image that protrudes from the surface of the caseback.
